âLetâs goâ said Finn, walking away. He did not look back.
As soon as they were safely away, Finn used a disposable phone to call the police and report Wagnerâs location.
The others couldnât understand why they would quickly give away his location. Why not make the government look for him themselves? Why not cause them hours and days of uncertainty?
But Finn was adamant that he wanted to move things along quickly. The sooner he was out of this damn country the better, and the only way to speed things up was to provoke Department 89 into a blind rage and make them lose their judgement. At least Finn was hoping this would be the case.
Due to his phone call, Wagner was found less than twenty minutes later by senior officers of the Federal police. They phoned Chief Inspector Busch, who took one disgusted look at the sign around Wagnerâs neck, whipped out his mobile phone from his pocket and dialled a number from memory. The phone was soon picked up at the other end.
âHans Unterwald?â said Busch, âChief Inspector Busch here. Weâve found Director Wagner. Heâs dead. Youâd better inform Major Decker and get her down here.â
When he hung up the phone, he looked at Wagnerâs body then cursed silently to himself. He knew right there and then that the body count had only just begun. The director of the internal intelligence service was dead. That could not go unanswered and unavenged. Decker would see to that.
